SIMETAL Dynacon
Dynamic process optimization for BOF converters

With the dynamic process model, an online calculation of temperature, weight and chemical analysis of steel and slag is cyclically performed throughout the entire steelmaking process. Dynacon works in combination with a measurement of converter offgas. A significant change in the offgas composition near the end of the refining process allows the exact end-of-blow time to be determined. Oxygen blowing is automatically stopped when the targeted carbon content of the steel is reached.

Continuous offgas measurement
The challenge
While demands on products and processes are ever increasing, steel producers meet capacity limits that may not least be caused by inadequate automation technology. Often, outdated automation systems supply poor optimization and insufficient documentation of steelmaking processes and thus cause high maintenance costs. In comparison to dynamic process models, static process models are mainly based on the equilibrium status of the heat at blowing end, which is in effect not reached in the converter process. The actual course of the blowing process (e.g. lance position, different stirring patterns) which effectively influences the condition of the steel bath cannot be considered. Temperature control is also of great importance since rapid changes of temperature and chemical composition of the steel bath during oxygen blowing complicate predictions. Direct continuous measurements of steel properties are currently not possible and the measurement of steel temperature and composition near blowing end interrupts the production process, thereby increasing tap-to-tap-time. Overblowing of heats unnecessarily prolongs the process and additionally results in higher deoxidation material consumption.

Our solution
Siemens VAI automation systems are based on decades of combined engineering, plant-building, operational, metallurgical and automation experience and are the key to high-tech BOF steelmaking for high quality products at low production costs. Siemens VAI is able to provide stable systems due to the application of their well-proven solutions. In addition, both integrated and standalone automation solutions are provided for all levels. Innovative process models which are purely based on physical and chemical principles make it possible to achieve accurate imaging of the complete BOF process. Dynamical determination of the blow-end point is also facilitated based on continuous offgas measurements, and well adjustable process models allow for offline tuning and simulation prior to release to the production system. Unlike other solutions, no software modifications are necessary to adapt model behavior. To round off the package, Siemens VAI provides worldwide metallurgical and automation assistance via remote links and local Siemens VAI service representatives.
